Identify & Remove Unconscious Movement with Single Hand Push Hands
Single Hand Fixed Foot Push Hands is one of the mosh underrated and one of the most important drills in Taijiquan’s curriculum . Because the exercise has a preset pattern or ” a known” , we can use that known to contrast the unknown . When we practice this exercise, it becomes apparent that your training partner is not always pushing ” the right way” . It is because we have the known pattern that we can observe the subtext of the drill . Even though it is a drill, almost all practitioners will try to win and it just may be that they have no idea that they are competing . Most practitioners are surprised when you point this out to them. Basically, any movement that does not conform to the preset pattern must be analyzed as to why it may be off target. This thinking and analysis will train your Listening Jin and eventually your Comprehending Jin. When i defend the pattern ( your conscious attack) , you will be right there with me and we will be in conflict . When i defend or follow my partner’s unconscious attack , since it is unconscious, i can easily add 4 ounces to topple 1000 pounds. When we Freestyle Push Hands , there is no known pattern which makes it harder to discern the conscious from the unconscious movement. This makes this simple drill extremely important in my opinion . My Fellow Practitioners and myself practice this whenever we get together .
