
The following footage shows me demonstrating how to use the transitional movements between Single Whip and the first Fair Lady in William CC Chen’s 60 movement form. William was more interested in force generation and fighting than he was in teaching techniques. BP Chan taught martial applications to literally everything. Most people do not really learn application and simply start with some version of pushing hands. The competitive nature of this type of training results in the use of strength becoming habitual. The concept of “first in the mind then in the body” is valuable in my opinion. Knowing the various ways in which the postures can be utilized results in these applications coming out naturally by following the Principles. Practitioners are often surprised at the way the postures and palm shapes can be utilized. Understanding how the posture will work and how it will fail is important in developing effective applications.
