Silk Reeling Pt 8 – Not just for grappling
Silk Reeling can be used very effectively in grappling but also in striking defence. When moving in six harmonies, the roots of the torso are always moving together as well as the middles , and the tips of my limbs. My limbs are also triangulating with my centerline unifying my body. A very important skill in fighting is flanking your opponent. Finding the appropriate angle to counterattack your opponent is generally the result of good footwork and re-positioning your body to counterattack. The big difference and really one of the more beautiful things about the Silk Reeling skill is that as I Parry my opponent off-line ,the coiling causes his body to turn in relation to mine. This happens because my body acts as the axle and his body acts as the rim of the wheel. My turning and parrying roll him off of my center defecting his posture while presenting his flank. This is all done with minimal movement creating maximum result. The coiling to neutralize actually also acts to load the body to issue. This is learning how to move and stay in center while moving. The result is that it is very efficient and energy conserving for me to defend myself. BP Chan used to say in Taijiquan , ” you are the center…”
