Tai Chi Ruler – Eye Training 1st Level , 5th Supplemental
This simple exercise is a gold mine. The first level has the practitioner combining the opening and closing of the spine with the release and turning of the Kuas / inguinal crease. The breathing is the genesis of the opening and closing of the spine. This action is combined with the release of the Kuas and the Guiding of the body with the Eyes. All of these actions combine to cause the eyes to trace an infinity symbol in front of the face. The opening and closing of the body causes a weight shift in the feet as does the releasing and turning in the Kuas. This weight shift also traces an infinity symbol in the front part of the foot from one foot to the next. If your eyes go outside of this functional range of movement , then your feet will start to edge. Overtime you begin to feel the connection between your eyes, the turning of your body , and your feet. Undisciplined use of the eyes causes a great deal of disturbance in the body and not only can start a falling momentum but they also are involved in tying up the joints in the extremities when they are over turned. this leaves the body with potential energies that can be manipulated by skilled practitioners. When you learn to move within and integrate these two relationships your movements will be much tighter and a lot more difficult to break into. If I try to turn the body with an active contraction in the hips I will get caught immediately . If the turning of the body is caused by the release of the Kuas , then the resistant force ricochets back on your opponent. This is a very simple mechanical look at this exercise which has much much deeper ramifications at higher levels in terms of training and unifying the intention and the spirit.
