The Five Animal Frolics – ” The Crane Steps ” to heal the Heart and Circulatory System.
The Five Animal Frolics are one of the oldest systems of Dao Yin still being practiced in modern times. They are considered Medical Qigong as they are used to target specific organs. There are Five Animals representing the Five Elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Crane or the Bird is used to heal the Circulatory System and the Heart. It is best practiced in the summer when the heat of the weather dilate the arteries taking the pressure off of the Heart. It has both mechanical as well as medical elements to it. Mechanically it massages the heart. Energetically it helps to open and free the Qi flow in the Heart Meridian. The Heart Meridian runs from the hollow of the armpit down the inside of the arm to the nail bed on the pinky side of the arm. This exercise is best trained facing South as the morning sun rises in the east , on the same side is your heart , entering that side of the body before passing through to the other side. There are 25 exercises in total not including variations. There are external and internal elements to each Posture. Training generally starts with the bear in the system that I have learned. That training generally begins in the spring time. I have chosen this example because of its simplicity to see and to understand. I also chosen this because we know many people with heart conditions. There are other elements that can also be utilized in the healing of the heart. Depending on the condition we may accompany the exercise with sounds to release excess heat for example. This is one of the more valuable things that I know because it is like a medicine bag that I take with me wherever I go and this helps me too maintain my health .
