Using the unusual foot pivots in the Taijiquan form.
You often see a practitioner moving their body in unusual ways when practicing Taijiquan. The first place that it becomes apparent is when doing the transition from push into single whip. The foot pivots on the heel following the direction of the hand. This serves to keep the body integrated. The upper and the lower parts moving in harmony. The following example shows me demonstrating this concept with Aaron. I demonstrate and example of Single Whip as performed by Wu Tu Nan . The effect of the turning causes Aaron to actually miss completely with the second punch causing us to break into laughter. this is an example of controlling the action from the point of contact. It is more efficient to control your opponent’s center at the point of contact than it is to disconnect and re-engage with another hand. These little details when practiced properly and understood become good habits. They also act to supercharge your movement allowing you to move powerfully and effortly .
